Restrictions on Belarusian Athletes Lifted

According to Главком: On May 7, 2026, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board decided to revoke the recommendations issued on February 28, 2022, and March 28, 2023, which had previously limited Belarusian athletes. From now on, these competitors can take part in international events without any restrictions, though they will continue to compete as Individual Neutral Athletes (AIN).

Belarusian athletes have already appeared at the 2024 Paris Olympics and the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Games, reporting no issues either on or off the field. According to the IOC, 'since the issuance of the IOC recommendations for international federations and organizers of international sports events on March 28, 2023, athletes with Belarusian passports have participated in numerous international sports events' without any problems.

Status of the Russian Olympic Committee

It is important to note, however, that the situation with the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) remains distinct. The ROC's membership is still suspended, and the IOC Legal Affairs Commission continues to review this matter. Currently, the Belarusian NOC is in compliance with the Olympic Charter, whereas the ROC does not enjoy the same standing.

Additionally, WADA is investigating the Russian anti-doping system, a point the IOC Executive Board highlighted, noting that it 'viewed recent information with concern.' The IOC aims to gain a clearer understanding of this situation in the context of the overall state of sport.

The removal of restrictions on Belarusian athletes signals a shift in the IOC's approach to allowing participation from countries that have faced political and sports sanctions. This could open new doors for Belarusian athletics on the global stage, while underscoring the contrast with Russian competitors who remain under sanctions. A key part of this process involves ongoing monitoring of anti-doping policies, reflecting the IOC's commitment to preserving the integrity of international sport.

The IOC's recent decision to lift restrictions on Belarusian athletes comes amid significant changes within the organization, including the recent suspension of the esports committee and cancellation of Olympic plans. This shift highlights the ongoing reevaluation of sports governance and its impact on international competition, raising questions about the future of various athletic disciplines.
