Kyiv Under Attack: Fires, Air Pollution, and Utility Failures

Київ під обстрілом: Вогняні зони, забруднення повітря та проблеми з комунальними послугами.

Widespread Damage and Disruption in Kyiv Following Overnight Strikes

Following hostile strikes on the night of January 20, 2023, fires broke out on Kyiv's left bank, leading to significant air pollution and widespread disruptions to electricity and water supplies. One casualty was reported in the Dniprovskyi district. These attacks are part of a broader pattern of strikes on Ukrainian cities, severely impacting civilian infrastructure.

Critical Water Shortages and Power Outages

The water supply situation is critical, with nearly the entire left bank—including the Desnianskyi, Darnytskyi, and Dniprovskyi districts—left without water. Low water pressure was also reported in the Troieshchyna residential area. Power outages initially affected 173,000 households, though electricity was restored to 162,000 homes after 10 a.m.

Additionally, heating was lost in over 5,635 apartment buildings. The city's metro system operated on a modified schedule due to the power issues, complicating travel for residents.

Authorities have issued the following health and safety recommendations for citizens:

  • Keep windows closed.
  • Limit time spent outdoors if possible.
  • Drink more water.
  • Use an air purifier if available.

These measures can help reduce the negative health impacts of the polluted air.

This incident underscores the severe and ongoing security situation in Ukraine, marked by constant threats to infrastructure and civilian safety. City and national authorities continue working to restore essential services and ensure public safety during wartime. Residents are urged to stay informed and follow official guidance to protect their health.
