Dairy Export Plunge: Over 9% Lost in a Single Month

Значне зниження експорту молочних продуктів: більше 9% втрат за один місяць

Overall Dairy Trade Turnover

In the first half of April 2026, the total foreign trade turnover of dairy products reached $23.2 million—6.1% lower than the same period in March. Dairy exports took a significant hit, dropping 9.1% compared to March 2026 and 6.3% versus February 2026. Meanwhile, imports fell 3.9% from March but edged up 0.6% compared to February.

Data from the expert-analytical service of the Union of Dairy Enterprises of Ukraine (UDF) reveals major shifts in export composition. Specifically, exports of condensed milk and cream plummeted by a record 40%. Non-condensed milk and cream also saw a steep decline, falling 35%. Shipments of whey dropped by 15%.

Market Trends

Despite the overall export downturn, certain segments showed growth:

  • Exports of fermented milk products rose by 40%
  • Cheese of all types increased by 18%
  • Butter and milk fat exports grew by 13%

On the import side, total volumes decreased 3.9% from March but were up 0.6% compared to February. However, imports of whey fell 16%, and imports of fermented milk products dropped 12%.

Thus, the data for the first half of April 2026 paints a complex picture: a decline in overall turnover and exports, alongside some bright spots in specific categories. For context, Ukraine's dairy sector has been navigating shifting global demand and economic pressures, making these trends critical for producers and traders alike.

The situation in Ukraine's dairy market reflects changing consumer preferences and shifts in the international competitiveness of various products.

The export slump in major categories may stem from factors such as altered demand abroad and the broader economic climate. Yet, the positive momentum in segments like fermented products and cheese hints at emerging niche opportunities—a key consideration for domestic producers as they map out their strategies.
