Researchers from Rutgers Health found that measuring waist circumference is nearly as accurate a method for detecting excess body fat as more complex techniques. An analysis of data from 1900 American adults aged 20 to 59 showed that body mass index (BMI) does not always reflect the true picture, missing a significant number of people with obesity. Thus, the waist circumference measurement can serve as a simple additional indicator of risks associated with excess weight.

Research Methods

The study is based on data obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in the USA. Researchers compared several obesity determination methods using an accurate way of measuring body fat percentage. Among the tested approaches were methods that considered:

  • BMI
  • Waist circumference
  • Waist-to-height ratio
  • Waist-to-hip ratio

However, the more complex system did not show a significant advantage in accuracy compared to BMI or waist circumference alone.

It should be noted that the waist circumference measure used without other measurements showed results that practically matched those of more complicated methods. At the same time, using only BMI proved insufficient to detect a significant number of people who, based on actual fat content, met the criteria for obesity. This is because BMI does not reflect body composition and does not account for where fat accumulates.

Waist circumference is a simpler measure to take during a routine medical examination than the waist-to-hip ratio. The lead author of the study, Aayush Visariya, emphasizes the importance of this information for practical use in medical practice, as simple measurements can help identify obesity risks in a wider range of patients.
