The monobank Incident

Ukraine's Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets, has initiated formal proceedings following the public disclosure of a monobank client's personal data. The action was prompted after Oleg Gorokhovsky, a co-founder of the bank, posted a photo of client Karina Kolb taken during a video verification call. According to reports, the client's account was blocked due to a Russian flag visible in the background.

Following the public outcry, Oleg Gorokhovsky apologized for his actions. For her part, Karina Kolb stated that she was unfairly accused of holding pro-Russian views. Dmytro Lubinets noted that

"the co-founder of monobank admitted his wrongdoing after publishing the client's personal data. However, this admission of error does not absolve him of responsibility."

He further emphasized that

"the law is the same for everyone, and its violation cannot be justified by emotions or public reaction."

Legal Compliance Review

The Commissioner's office confirmed that proceedings have been opened to investigate the circumstances of a potential breach of laws concerning personal data protection and banking secrecy. The results of this review and any subsequent steps will be announced once all necessary information has been gathered.

This case highlights the critical importance of data privacy in the digital age, particularly for financial institutions. Incidents where client data becomes public can severely damage not only a bank's reputation but also erode broader trust in the financial system. The investigation led by the Human Rights Commissioner aims to ensure legal compliance and uphold citizens' rights in this sphere. Monobank is a prominent Ukrainian digital-only bank known for its innovative services, making this incident particularly noteworthy for its customer base.
