In the capital, the possibility of partially restoring the operation of trams and trolleybuses at the expense of increasing the intervals between metro trains is being discussed. This initiative was put forward by the civic organization Kyiv Passengers. Activists believe that the complete replacement of electric transport with buses has already demonstrated its ineffectiveness for the second time since 2022. This is noted by the telegram channel Kyiv Passengers.
According to the organization's calculations, over the past week, the passenger flow in surface public transport has decreased by 40%, and overall in the city — by about a quarter. At the same time, even an additional 40 bus departures cannot compensate for the stoppage of trolleybuses and trams. Activists point out that the contact network and substations remain energized, as electric transport regularly performs technical trips to clear the wires from icing.
Restoration of Electric Transport: Public Arguments
The civic organization suggests launching separate routes for trams and trolleybuses in a limited mode. For this, in their opinion, it is necessary to increase the intervals of metro movement near the terminal stations. Activists emphasize that the subway does not cover several large areas where the reduction of transport is felt most acutely.
This specifically concerns such areas of the city:
- Troieshchyna;
- Voskresenka;
- Borshchahivka;
- Vidradnyi;
- Solomyanka;
- Vynohradar.
Transport Operation in Kyiv: What is Known About the Situation
The message also notes that waiting for the metro at underground stations in frost is more comfortable than being at stops of surface transport. Currently, journalists have turned to the Kyiv City State Administration for a comment.
Earlier, due to the difficult situation in Kyiv's energy system caused by massive Russian attacks, the operation of electric transport was temporarily halted. On major routes, duplicating bus routes have been organized, running along 30 trolleybus and 10 tram lines on both banks of the city. The timeframe for the full restoration of electric transport depends on the repair of damaged infrastructure and the stabilization of the energy situation.
Earlier, we reported that in 2026 new rules for passenger access would come into effect in Kyiv's metro, which include strict requirements for electronic tickets and restrictions on the transportation of luggage.
