Poland and Ukraine Restart Discussions on Fighter Jets
Diplomatic dialogue between Poland and Ukraine has resumed concerning the handover of Polish MiG-29 fighter jets to the Ukrainian military. In exchange for the aircraft, Kyiv has offered Warsaw access to its drone technology. The renewed discussions were announced by Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, during a press conference held in Warsaw on Monday, July 6.
Ukraine has put forward a proposal to transfer its unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technologies to Poland over the next two years. Kosiniak-Kamysz noted in late June that a previous agreement fell through due to the lack of a mutually accepted cooperation framework. However, the possibility of transferring MiG-29s was formally included in a bilateral security agreement between Ukraine and Poland in 2024. Poland is phasing out its MiG-29 fleet as it takes delivery of F-35 jets and other Western aircraft platforms.
Outlook for Bilateral Cooperation
According to Kosiniak-Kamysz, “last week brought an opportunity to continue these negotiations. We received a signal from the Ukrainian side that it remains interested in reaching such a deal.” He also emphasized that
“Warsaw will only consider an agreement that is mutually beneficial”and summarized the arrangement as “MiGs in exchange for drones.”
Why have the MiG-29s become a topic of negotiation? The retirement of these jets from Poland’s air force is driven by the arrival of newer aircraft like the F-35. This creates a window for cooperation with Ukraine, which is actively seeking ways to bolster its defensive capabilities.
Does this mean the jets will be transferred soon? While talks have resumed, a successful outcome hinges on both countries finalizing a clear cooperation mechanism. Further updates on progress in this matter are still pending.
The revival of negotiations between Poland and Ukraine over the MiG-29 transfer highlights the importance of bilateral collaboration amid ongoing security challenges. Given the current regional situation, a finalized agreement could significantly strengthen Ukraine’s defense capacity as it continues to seek advanced technology and weaponry to support its armed forces. Cooperation in drone technology may also become a cornerstone of the strategic partnership between the two nations.
While the discussions on the MiG-29 transfer are back on track, it's important to remember that Poland had previously suspended deliveries due to a breach of agreement. This situation highlights the complexities of military cooperation between the two nations.
