American mechanic Scotty Kilmer warned drivers about the risks of driving on a nearly empty fuel tank. According to him, this mistake can lead to serious damage to the car and significant repair costs. The expert explained in a YouTube video why this practice is dangerous for new cars.
In old cars with carburetors, this would only lead to engine stalling, but modern cars can suffer serious damage due to the lack of fuel in the tank.
Many drivers believe that it is safe to drive until the fuel gauge reaches the 'E' (empty) mark. However, this notion is misguided, Kilmer noted, emphasizing the important difference between old and new cars.
Explanation of the problem:
The key issue is that in modern fuel systems, the fuel pump is located inside the fuel tank, where fuel is used as lubrication for the internal mechanisms of the pump.
Fuel actually lubricates the bearings inside the fuel pump. When the fuel runs out, the pump begins to suck in air, which can lead to bearing failure.
To avoid this, Kilmer advises drivers to refuel when the tank is a quarter full to extend the life of the fuel pump and avoid costly repairs.
Other mechanic tips:
- Do not install wheels with a larger diameter than specified by the manufacturer to avoid premature wear of the suspension.
- Use spark plug diagnostics for a quick assessment of the engine's condition.
The mechanic emphasizes the importance of following recommendations to maintain the car and keep it in good condition for a long time.
