Prime Minister Meets with Regional Military Administration Heads
Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko held a meeting with heads of the Regional Military Administrations (RMAs). The discussions focused on ensuring energy resilience, increasing teacher salaries, providing school meals, constructing shelters, and implementing a nationwide health screening program. The Prime Minister stressed the need for specific government programs to secure critical infrastructure, a vital concern for a nation at war.
Key Policy Decisions Announced
- Teacher Salaries: A 30% pay increase for teachers, effective January 1, 2024, has been implemented. Educators received their first increased payments for January at the start of February. This measure aims to improve the financial standing of educational staff amidst the ongoing economic pressures of the conflict.
- School Safety and Nutrition: Starting in September, all students from grades 1 through 11 nationwide will receive free school meals. The state budget has allocated 14.4 million hryvnias for this program. Furthermore, 5 billion hryvnias are earmarked for school shelters and 1 billion for underground kindergartens, initiatives designed to facilitate safer in-person or hybrid learning for Ukrainian children.
- Health Screening Program: A separate screening initiative for citizens aged 40 and over is now active. Over 30,000 Ukrainians have already registered for examinations, with 22,000 receiving funds on their Diia e-governance app cards to cover the cost. Nearly 1,000 medical institutions have applied to participate, of which 937 have been verified by the Ministry of Health and are ready to accept patients.
Yuliia Svyrydenko emphasized that the program's primary goal is to provide an opportunity for free primary health checks. This helps identify early risks of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and mental health disorders, which are critical for preventative care during a time of national stress.
The meeting underscores the importance of cooperation between central and regional authorities in addressing pressing social issues like education, healthcare, and safety. The introduction of free school meals and higher teacher salaries is intended to bolster the educational sector during a period of economic instability and wartime challenges. The screening program represents a significant step toward improving public health, particularly for at-risk groups.
