At the meeting of the ministers of justice and internal affairs of the European Union countries in Brussels, a package of measures aimed at significantly tightening immigration rules for the bloc was approved. The new regulations provide for the simplification of the deportation process of foreigners and the acceleration of refusals to those seeking asylum. This information is reported by 'Glavkom' with reference to the official page of the European Union.
The measures are intended to reduce the pressure on the reception systems for refugees in EU countries and to counter 'abuse of the system.'
New opportunities within the EU migration policy
One of the key initiatives is the possibility of considering asylum applications directly at the border in an expedited manner. In case of refusal, such applicants will simply not be allowed into the country. For EU member states, the placement of immigrants in 'return centers' for rapid deportation will be simplified.
It is also planned to create a list of 'safe countries' whose citizens will automatically receive a refusal for asylum. In addition, it has been agreed to establish centers for processing asylum applications outside the European Union.
'This is a turning point in the reform of the European system for immigrants and refugees. The new rules are aimed at effectively addressing applications, reducing pressure on reception systems for refugees and sending a clear signal: Europe will not tolerate abuse of its system,' said European Commissioner for Migration Magnus Brunner.
The discussion of new migration policy rules has been ongoing since 2020. After the presentation of the draft of the new regulations by the European Commission at the beginning of this year, the ministers finally agreed and clarified them.
It is expected that the new rules will come into effect in June 2026. Earlier, the European Union exempted Poland from the solidarity mechanism in the migration pact, so the country is no longer obliged to accept migrants.
The European Union has adopted new measures to strengthen immigration rules for the bloc. The regulations provide for the simplification of the deportation procedures for foreigners and the acceleration of refusals for those seeking asylum. The changes aim to reduce pressure on refugee reception systems and combat any abuse. It is expected that the new rules will become effective in June 2026.
