Restructuring the Ukrainian Armed Forces
Ukrainian serviceman Illia Shpoliansky, speaking on political analyst Yurii Romanenko's broadcast, has reported the initial outcomes of a major structural reform within the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). This reform involves a transition from a brigade-based to a corps-based command system, a significant overhaul of the military's command structure that the expert says is already yielding benefits. This restructuring is a key part of Ukraine's efforts to adapt its military to the demands of a large-scale, protracted war.
Previously, the AFU structure consisted of 150 to 200 brigades operating across the front line. Illia Shpoliansky noted that 'each of those brigades was a problem,' detailing the difficulties and numerous coordination gaps that arose with such a high number of individual units. Under the new command system, the number of major formations has been reduced to 20 corps, which, according to the serviceman, has resolved many of these issues.
The substantial corps reform has begun to be felt. I am not prepared to comment on whether it was right to transition to a divisional system or a corps system. But the fact is that previously we had, for example, 150 to 200 brigades along the front.

He also stated that 'previously it was simply a mess. Endless redeployments of brigades from one place to another led to very large and heavy losses, because at the moment of rotation, very serious losses of territory, people, and equipment occurred.'
Now, according to Shpoliansky, 'these chaotic redeployments are gone.' All units are fixed within corps that have their own defined areas of responsibility. As he noted, 'the controllability of the troops has become significantly higher.' These changes in the command structure, the serviceman says, have positively impacted combat effectiveness and reduced the risks of losses.
The Significance of the Reform
A video of the interview with Illia Shpoliansky and Yurii Romanenko is available on YouTube under the title: 'What is Happening on the Front. Illia Shpoliansky, Yurii Romanenko.'
The command reform in the Ukrainian Armed Forces represents a critical step in enhancing the efficiency of military operations, particularly under the conditions of modern warfare. Reducing the number of direct reporting units and clearly defining zones of responsibility helps lower loss risks and improves army coordination. This also indicates a drive to optimize resources and enhance the AFU's operational capacity amid a prolonged conflict.
The recent restructuring of the Ukrainian Armed Forces is not only about command efficiency; it also impacts the processes for soldiers reintegrating into active duty. As the military streamlines these procedures, it is crucial to understand how these changes facilitate a smoother transition for returning personnel.
