Ukraine Intercepts 148 of 154 Russian Drones in Major Assault, Causing Fatalities and Widespread Blackouts

В Україні успішно знищено більшість російських безпілотників під час великого нападу, що призвело до людських втрат та масових відключень електроенергії.

March 21st Assault on Ukraine

Russian forces launched a massive overnight aerial assault against Ukraine between the evening of March 20th and the morning of March 21st, deploying a total of 154 drones. While Ukrainian air defense units successfully intercepted 148 of the incoming targets, the attack inflicted severe damage to energy infrastructure across the Chernihiv, Kyiv, Mykolaiv, and Dnipropetrovsk regions. The strikes also resulted in casualties and destruction in Zaporizhzhia. These attacks are part of a sustained Russian campaign targeting Ukraine's power grid, especially during the winter months.

The assault, which began at 6:00 PM on March 20th and lasted until 8:30 AM on March 21st, involved Shahed, Gerbera, and Italmas-type drones. Launch sites were identified in Oryol, Kursk, Millerovo, and Primorsko-Akhtarsk in Russia, as well as in Hvardiiske in occupied Crimea. The attack resulted in five confirmed drone strikes across four locations and seven sites where falling debris was recorded.

Consequences of the Attack

  • In Zaporizhzhia, a direct hit on a private residential house led to its complete destruction. A man and a woman were killed, and two girls, aged 11 and 15, were injured.
  • In Chernihiv region, a strike on an energy facility in the Nizhyn district left the regional capital completely without power. A total of 430,000 subscribers in the Nizhyn, Pryluky, and Chernihiv districts were cut off. The energy company Chernihivoblenergo stated that repair crews have begun emergency restoration work.
  • In Kyiv region, the city of Slavutych was left without electricity, affecting approximately 21,000 residents. Critical infrastructure in Slavutych has been switched to backup power, with heat and water supply maintained. Resilience points have been opened in the city.
  • In Mykolaiv region, energy infrastructure was damaged, leaving parts of the region without power.
  • In Dnipropetrovsk region, over 10 attacks were recorded in the Synelnykove and Nikopol districts, causing fires in the Mezhivska and Pokrovska communities and damaging a local fire station. As noted by Mykola Kalashnyk, energy workers are operating in an enhanced mode to restore power as quickly as possible.

Forces involved in repelling the attack included aviation, anti-aircraft missile units, mobile fire groups, electronic warfare units, and unmanned systems. Trolleybus services in Chernihiv were temporarily suspended, with buses operating on the only active route, number 11. All these measures are being taken to ensure public safety and restore electricity supply. The military urged citizens to follow safety rules, emphasizing that 'the attack is ongoing, with several hostile UAVs still in the airspace.'

This assault is the latest in a series of attacks that have escalated the conflict and worsened the humanitarian situation in Ukraine, demanding an urgent response from the state and the international community. The destruction of energy infrastructure not only harms the economy but also endangers the lives of civilians left without electricity and other vital services. Restoring power and ensuring citizen safety remain the top priorities for Ukrainian services in this ongoing crisis.

The recent drone assault highlights the ongoing vulnerability of Ukraine's energy infrastructure, a theme further explored in our report on the targeting of critical energy facilities across the country. Understanding the broader implications of these attacks is crucial as they continue to disrupt essential services and threaten civilian safety.
