Russia Launches Major Nuclear Forces Exercise

Російські військові проводять масштабні навчання ядерних сил.

Exercise Focuses on Nuclear Force Readiness and Deployment

From May 19 to 21, the Russian Armed Forces are conducting a large-scale drill centered on preparing and deploying nuclear capabilities. The exercise involves multiple branches of the military, including:

  • Strategic Rocket Forces
  • Northern and Pacific Fleets
  • Long-Range Aviation Command
  • Select units from the Leningrad and Central Military Districts

In total, the drill includes over 200 missile launchers, more than 140 aircraft, 73 surface vessels, and 13 submarines. The primary objective is to practice the preparation and use of nuclear weapons stationed in Belarus.

Belarus Conducts Military Drills and Russia Unveils New Plans

On May 18, the Belarusian Armed Forces began their own field exercises focused on deploying Russian tactical nuclear weapons. These drills aim to enhance combat readiness and response capabilities against potential threats. Belarus’s defense ministry emphasized that the training prioritizes 'stealth operations, long-distance movement, and calculations for deploying forces and equipment.'

Separately, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced plans to deploy the new 'Sarmat' intercontinental ballistic missile by the end of the year. Putin claims the Sarmat has a range exceeding 35,000 kilometers and is intended to replace the Soviet-era 'Voevoda' system. These developments come amid growing concerns from Ukraine, which reports repeated Russian attempts to draw Belarus into the war against it.

The current situation highlights an escalation in military exercises and an intensification of Russia’s strategic forces, potentially signaling an effort to showcase capabilities amid rising regional tensions. This has raised alarms not only in Ukraine but also among neighboring states monitoring the evolving military landscape. The increased military presence in Belarus and joint drills with Russia could further destabilize Eastern Europe, creating new challenges for regional security.

As military tensions escalate, recent actions in Belarus, such as forest closures near the Ukrainian border, underscore the region's growing security concerns. These developments reflect a broader strategy by both Russia and Belarus to enhance their military readiness amid heightened threats, suggesting a coordinated approach to defense and deterrence in the area.
