Russia Deploys Shahed-136 Drone in Africa for the First Time

В Росії вперше відправили дрон Shahed-136 до Африки.

First Recorded Use of Shahed-136 Drone on African Soil

Russia has for the first time used a Shahed-136 strike drone in Africa. The unmanned aerial vehicle was shot down by local insurgents in Mali, and subsequent inspection of the wreckage revealed civilian-grade electronic components inside. This information was confirmed by Vladyslav Vlasiuk, the Ukrainian president’s commissioner for sanctions policy. This incident marks the first verified deployment of this type of drone in the Sahel region.

The downed drone is a new variant from the KK series, equipped with an airburst warhead detonation function. During the examination of the device, investigators found the following parts:

  • microchips
  • transistors
  • diodes
  • civilian-grade relays

Some of these components were manufactured by STMicroelectronics, Mornsun, Wayon Electronics, GigaDevice, Shenzhen Codaca Electronic, and NCR Industrial. Notably, the same electronic configuration is used in drones that Russia deploys in its war against Ukraine.

Rebels Retake Control of Key City

Against this backdrop, rebels in Mali have regained control of the city of Kidal, which had been held since 2023 by Malian troops and Russia-aligned forces. The African Corps has announced the withdrawal of its units from the city.

Vladyslav Vlasiuk: 'Russia is increasingly transferring its military technologies and instruments of war to other regions—specifically to Africa. And it is doing this largely through dual-use components that continue to flow unimpeded into Russian production.'

He also noted that 'as long as the supply of such components to Russia remains unregulated, Russian drone manufacturing will continue to scale up, along with the geographic reach of their deployment.'

This incident highlights the growing threat posed by Russian military technology in Africa, which could further destabilize the region. The use of drones built with civilian parts underscores how easily accessible technologies can be repurposed for military ends. The expansion of Russian influence and military presence in Africa is raising alarm among international observers, as it has the potential to reshape the geopolitical landscape both within the region and beyond.

As the situation in Mali escalates, the implications of Russian drone technology are becoming increasingly evident. A recent discovery of a drone wing from an Iranian Shahed in Kyiv highlights the broader network of military support involving such technologies. To understand the connections and the potential consequences of these developments, explore how similar components are impacting conflicts across regions, including the findings in Kyiv's recent drone-related incidents.
