According to the published procurement documents obtained by 'Military', the Russian defense ministry ordered 56 cruise missiles 3M-14S of the 'Kalibr' family with a 'special warhead' – meaning with the ability to be equipped with a nuclear warhead, reports 'Glavkom'.
The missiles will be supplied by the Novator design bureau, which has been under sanctions since 2022. The delivery period for the missiles is until 2026.
The 3M-14S 'Kalibr' model has an inertial-satellite guidance system and can fly at low altitudes, making it difficult to detect by air defense systems. The missiles can be equipped with both nuclear and conventional warheads, although conventional ones are more often used in active use. 'Kalibrs' are deployed on frigates, corvettes, small missile ships, and submarines, and are used for strikes from various bases in maritime operations. An additional batch of missiles will enhance the strike capabilities of the Russian navy but will create new challenges for early detection systems of enemy strike missiles and air defense.
This news signals a strengthening of Russia's defense capabilities due to the acquisition of new 'Kalibr' cruise missiles with nuclear warheads. This may affect the geopolitical situation in the region and increase tensions in international relations.
