Slovak and Hungarian Teams in Talks for Tournament
The Russian Ice Hockey Federation is currently negotiating the participation of Slovak and Hungarian national teams in the Channel One Cup. Roman Rotenberg, First Vice-President of the Federation, expressed optimism about their potential involvement.
"We are now discussing the participation of the Slovak and Hungarian national teams in the Channel One Cup. As you can see, Slovakia and Hungary support Russia on all key issues. We are absolutely positive, there is positive momentum,"Rotenberg stated.
Role of Neutral Athletes Highlighted
In a related development, on February 29, 2024, neutral athlete Aleksandra Saiutina attended Vladimir Putin's annual address to the Federal Assembly. Saiutina, recognized as a neutral competitor by the International Skating Union (ISU), was present at the event alongside Putin's allies and Russian military personnel involved in the war against Ukraine. Her participation underscores Russia's efforts to maintain a presence in international sport despite widespread sanctions.
Last year's Channel One Cup featured teams from 'Russia 25', Kazakhstan, and Belarus. The invitation to new teams signals Russia's intent to sustain sporting ties with nations that align with its political stances. This move is widely seen as an attempt to counter the country's international isolation following its invasion of Ukraine.
The potential inclusion of Slovak and Hungarian squads could be interpreted as a Russian strategy to bolster both athletic and political alliances with supportive nations. It also reflects a desire to expand its sporting partnerships. The showcasing of neutral athletes like Aleksandra Saiutina further emphasizes Russia's aim to continue participating in global sports events, navigating around the political challenges it faces.
