Attack on Kharkiv
On June 15, Russian forces launched two drone strikes targeting the Shevchenkivskyi and Kholodnohirskyi districts of Kharkiv. One of these hits ignited a fire inside an enclosure at the city zoo, resulting in the deaths of several animals. Fire and rescue units were immediately dispatched to contain the blaze.
As emergency crews worked to manage the aftermath of the initial assault, Russian occupiers carried out a second attack on a civilian facility where State Emergency Service (SES) personnel were operating. This subsequent shelling tragically killed multiple firefighters. The SES has since released the names of the fallen heroes who lost their lives while performing their duties.
Evacuation and Humanitarian Fallout
Rescue workers and psychologists from the SES, together with officers from the National Police and zoo staff, evacuated a vivarium building on the premises.
“Through joint efforts, they managed to save and move the animals to a safe location,” the SES report stated.The day’s events stand as yet another stark illustration of the conflict’s humanitarian toll in Ukraine.
