Russian Hardliners Push Putin to Escalate Drone Strike Response

Жорсткі радикали в Росії вимагали посилити удари дронами у відповідь на теперішню ситуацію.

Nationalist Factions Demand Stronger Military Action

Hardline Russian nationalists are pressuring President Vladimir Putin to abandon diplomacy and ramp up military operations in retaliation for Ukraine’s drone strikes, as well as frustration over unfulfilled U.S. promises to end the war on Moscow’s terms. These groups have issued a series of demands, including:

  • full-scale mobilization;
  • destruction of Kyiv’s government district;
  • assassination of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy;
  • strikes on European factories producing drones;
  • consideration of tactical nuclear weapons use.

This month, Ukraine has launched deep strikes targeting Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and Crimea. Russia has reported two fatal attacks on civilian buses. Additionally, a Ukrainian strike sparked a fire at a Moscow oil refinery last week. A pro-war blog with over 650,000 followers has called for bombing major Ukrainian cities to make them uninhabitable.

Mounting Pressure on the Kremlin

Calls for harsher measures are not new. Nationalists have long demanded:

  • full mobilization;
  • destruction of Kyiv’s government quarter;
  • killing of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy;
  • attacks on European drone manufacturing sites;
  • use of tactical nuclear weapons.

Some nationalists are even urging Moscow to adopt Iran’s wartime tactics against the United States.

So far, Putin has resisted these calls, but analysts warn that such rhetoric complicates decision-making, fuels public sentiment, and raises expectations for a broader military campaign. Notably, three senior Russian officials have stated that talks with the U.S. have hit a dead end, and peace proposals were tabled during last year’s Putin-Trump summit in Alaska.

“What else has to happen before we start fighting for real? War means victory at any cost. Ukrainians are fighting, so they use everything they have.” — Konstantin Malofeev.

Amid these demands, Putin continues to hold back from endorsing the most extreme nationalist proposals. For now, he appears confident in his current strategy.

The escalation calls from Russian radicals highlight growing regional tensions and the potential for further conflict. Putin’s refusal to embrace these extreme measures may reflect his desire to maintain control, but pressure from hardline elements could complicate wartime strategy decisions. The situation remains volatile, and future developments could significantly impact international relations and European security.

The growing pressure from hardline factions in Russia is indicative of a broader shift in the national sentiment towards the war. As the conflict continues to escalate, understanding the potential conditions for a resolution becomes increasingly important.
