Russian Military Court Sentences Nine Ukrainians
A Russian military court in Rostov-on-Don has handed down lengthy prison sentences, ranging from 14 to 20 years, to nine Ukrainian citizens convicted of plotting terrorist acts. The trial, which began in late 2023, centered on alleged events from the spring and summer of 2022. According to the prosecution, the defendants planned a series of attacks in the occupied part of the Kherson region, targeting figures including the deputy head of the pro-Russian administration, Kirill Stremousov, former head of the Kherson customs service, Vitaly Bulyuk, and other officials. This case is part of a pattern of prosecutions by Russian authorities against Ukrainians since the full-scale invasion began.

All nine convicts maintain they were abducted at various times between July and September 2022. During the court proceedings, they retracted earlier testimonies. This sentencing follows other recent convictions, including two servicemen from the Ukrainian 'Azov' 12th Special Purpose Brigade who received 24 and 26-year terms, and a 31-year-old Ukrainian marine, Oleksandr Malovychko, sentenced by a court in the so-called Donetsk People's Republic.
The judge stated that 'under the Russian Criminal Procedure Code, such a status is not provided for.'
These verdicts have raised significant human rights concerns, as the defendants allege kidnapping and forced detention. The situation highlights the complex legal and political landscape in the region, where the conflict between Ukraine and Russia continues and judicial systems are often leveraged for political objectives. Such cases contribute to ongoing international tensions and underscore unresolved issues of justice and due process in the context of the war.
