Lawsuit Filed by the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office
The Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) has initiated legal proceedings before the High Anti-Corruption Court, demanding that assets belonging to the head of a district court in the Vinnytsia region be declared unjustified and confiscated for the state. This action follows a lifestyle monitoring investigation conducted by the National Agency on Corruption Prevention (NACP), supplemented by evidence gathered by SAPO itself.
The total value of the contested assets exceeds UAH 6.8 million. These assets include:
- a three-room apartment in Kyiv, purchased in 2020;
- a one-room apartment in Kyiv, purchased in 2021;
- income from renting out one of the apartments, amounting to at least UAH 142,000.
All properties were registered under the names of the judge's close relatives. Notably, the judge's daughter resided in one of the apartments, while the judge himself regularly stayed there during vacations and weekends. The other apartment was rented out, with proceeds flowing into accounts linked to the judge's associates.
Financial Discrepancies
The official incomes of the judge's relatives were insufficient to cover the purchase of these assets. The combined lawful earnings of the judge and his spouse during the relevant period fell far short of the assets' value. The gap between the asset value and verified income sources exceeds UAH 5.5 million. As a result, a seizure order has been placed on the property to secure the lawsuit.
This case underscores the critical role of anti-corruption measures in Ukraine, particularly within the judiciary, where corruption can erode public trust in the justice system.
SAPO's lawsuit could set an important precedent in the fight against corruption, potentially strengthening legal frameworks and promoting transparency among public officials. Similar cases may also encourage other officials to adhere to ethical standards and legal requirements, positively impacting the country's overall corruption landscape.
