Prosecutor Files Lawsuit with High Anti-Corruption Court

According to САП: A prosecutor from the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) has filed a claim with the High Anti-Corruption Court, seeking to declare as unjustified the assets of a district court chairman from the Vinnytsia region, valued at over UAH 6.8 million, and to confiscate them for the state. The lawsuit is based on materials from the National Agency on Corruption Prevention (NACP) and evidence gathered by the SAPO prosecutor.

Details of the Lawsuit

The claim involves two apartments-a three-room unit and a one-room unit-acquired in Kyiv between 2020 and 2021. One of these properties generated at least UAH 142,000 in rental income. However, the gap between the total property value and the documented legal earnings exceeds UAH 5.5 million.

  • The real estate is registered in the names of the judge's close relatives.
  • The judge's daughter resided in one of the apartments.
  • Rental payments were deposited into accounts belonging to the judge's daughter and mother-in-law.

The official owners of the properties lacked sufficient lawful income to fund such purchases. A court has already imposed a seizure on the real estate.

This lawsuit marks a significant milestone in Ukraine's anti-corruption efforts, showcasing how oversight bodies collaborate to detect and halt illicit asset accumulation by public officials. If the assets are ruled unjustified, it could set a precedent for similar cases, underscoring the push for financial transparency among state servants. The move also aligns with a broader trend of tightening scrutiny over the holdings of public officeholders, which is crucial for building trust in Ukraine's judiciary and state institutions.

This lawsuit is part of a larger pattern of scrutiny over the financial activities of judges in Ukraine. For instance, a recent case involving an appeals court judge has revealed a luxury property in Lviv valued at $200,000, raising questions about the legitimacy of such assets.
