Serhiy Semenov Takes the Helm

Serhiy Semenov has been named the new senior coach of Ukraine's men's biathlon team. He succeeds Nadiia Bilova, who led the squad for the previous two years. This appointment marks a significant shift for the national team, as Semenov brings a decorated athletic career but no prior coaching experience to the role. The move comes as Ukraine seeks to strengthen its position in the highly competitive world of international winter sports.

A Champion's Pedigree and Team Reaction

Serhiy Semenov is a two-time World Championship medalist, having won bronze in the sprint event in 2016. His career also includes nine World Cup podium finishes and the 2014/15 Small Crystal Globe for individual races. He represented Ukraine at three Olympic Games (2010, 2014, 2018), with his best Olympic finish being 33rd in the sprint at Vancouver 2010. His last World Cup races were in the 2019/20 season.

Team captain Dmytro Pidruchnyi commented on Semenov's appointment, stating he does not view the lack of coaching background as a negative.

'To be honest, I don't see anything bad in this—on the contrary, I see many opportunities. I trust Serhiy in this sense; I know him and how he approaches any task he takes on. We'll see how it goes, but I think among the options on the table, this is the best decision,' he said.

Pidruchnyi added that he has already been in communication with the new coach, as they are friends.

'We talk often, both about future work and in general. This is not a simple or quick job; it requires measured steps,' the captain added.

Serhiy Semenov, who will soon turn 38, is returning to the core national team setup, where he will prepare for the season with the 'A' squad. The Ukrainian Biathlon Federation has also finalized its women's and men's team rosters for the 2026/27 season, with Yuliia Dzhima and the Merkushyna sisters named to the 'B' team.

The decision to appoint Semenov reflects the federation's attempt to find fresh approaches for the team's development amid intense global competition. His proven record as an athlete could serve as a powerful motivator for the team, though his lack of coaching experience introduces an element of uncertainty. His competitive successes may help him devise an effective strategy, potentially introducing new training methodologies beneficial for future competitions.

In addition to Semenov's appointment, the Ukrainian Biathlon Federation has made significant changes to its coaching staff for both the women's and men's national teams. These strategic moves aim to enhance overall performance and competitiveness on the international stage.
