Major Coaching Overhaul for Ukrainian Biathlon Teams

According to Главком: The Ukrainian Biathlon Federation has announced a comprehensive restructuring of the coaching staff for its men's and women's national teams ahead of the 2026/27 season. This includes the appointment of new head coaches and the approval of full rosters for the main squads, 'B' teams, and junior teams. This restructuring comes at a critical time for Ukrainian biathlon, which is seeking to rebuild its competitive standing on the world stage.

New Head Coaches Announced

Oksana Khvostenko has been named the new head coach of the women's team. A highly decorated former athlete, Khvostenko is a four-time World Championship medalist and a six-time World Cup podium finisher. She retired from competition after the 2010/11 season and was previously the head coach of Ukraine's junior women's team. The primary coaching staff for the women's team is now as follows:

  • Oksana Khvostenko (Head Coach)
  • Ihor Yarmosh
  • Dmytro Ivasenko

Serhiy Semenov will take over as head coach of the men's team. Semenov is a two-time World Championship medalist, notably winning a bronze medal in the sprint event in 2016. He last competed at the World Cup level during the 2019/20 season and has previously worked as a serviceman for the Ukrainian team. The primary coaching staff for the men's team is now as follows:

  • Serhiy Semenov (Head Coach)
  • Oleksii Kravchenko
  • Oleksii Krasovskyi

In addition, coaching staffs have been formed for the 'B' and junior teams. The women's 'B' team will be coached by Roman Leibyuk and Oleh Merkushyn, while the men's 'B' team will be led by Serhiy Zots (Head Coach) and Oleksandr Semenov. The junior women's team will be coached by Vasyl Tarasiuk and Oleksandr Bilanenko, and the junior men's team by Artem Pryma and Oleksandr Artiukh. A youth team has also been established, featuring Valentyna Semerenko, Arsen Zhuravel, and Valerii Lesnikov.

These significant changes follow a challenging period for Ukrainian biathlon, marked by the nation losing its five-woman World Cup quota for the first time in two decades.

The restructuring of the Ukrainian national teams' coaching staff is a crucial step in preparing for future international competitions, particularly in the context of the recent loss of a World Cup quota.

The appointments of experienced former champions like Oksana Khvostenko and Serhiy Semenov are expected to bring fresh perspectives and new strategic approaches to team development. This move signals the Federation's clear intent to implement effective solutions for improving athlete performance on the international circuit, especially given the intense modern competition in the sport.

As the Ukrainian Biathlon Federation embarks on this significant coaching transformation, it is essential to understand the broader implications for the teams' future. The changes come in the wake of a pressing need for revitalization, reflecting a trend seen in other national teams as well.
