U.S. Weighs Deploying Nuclear Weapons to New NATO Member States

США розглядають можливість розміщення ядерних арсеналів у нових країнах-членах НАТО.

Potential Expansion of U.S. Nuclear Arsenal in Europe

According to the Financial Times, which cites three informed sources, Washington is exploring the option of stationing nuclear arms in several European NATO countries. This move aims to reassure allies amid a reduction in conventional military support, and it has become the subject of confidential discussions. Poland and some Baltic nations have expressed interest in hosting dual-capable aircraft (DCA) bases—a program that allows for the deployment of nuclear-capable planes.

Former Polish President Andrzej Duda has already urged the United States to extend the DCA initiative to Polish territory. Warsaw has also joined a French-led effort to temporarily relocate a portion of France's nuclear deterrent. Allies' heightened focus on this issue has been largely driven by developments related to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, as well as statements from President Vladimir Putin.

Countries Participating in NATO's Nuclear Sharing Program

Six nations are currently part of NATO's nuclear sharing framework:

  • Belgium
  • Germany
  • Italy
  • Netherlands
  • Turkey
  • United Kingdom

U.S. nuclear warheads in Europe are stored and guarded by American military personnel. Additionally, allied air units train on F-35, F-15, and Tornado aircraft.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte noted that 'there is a shared understanding that, despite the U.S. shifting its focus to other theaters, the overall level of deterrence and defense in Europe must remain unchanged.'

These initiatives reflect growing concerns among allied nations in the face of new security challenges in Europe. The question of deploying nuclear weapons on the continent could significantly affect strategic stability in the region, particularly in the context of relations with Russia. Given the current situation, allies may bolster their defensive capabilities, which in turn could lead to fresh geopolitical tensions.

Mark Rutte also stressed the importance of alliance readiness, stating: 'Let me be absolutely clear. If anyone is foolish enough to attack us, the response will be devastating.'
As discussions about the potential deployment of nuclear weapons intensify, it's essential to consider the broader implications of the recent announcement regarding a significant reduction in U.S. military assets for NATO. This shift in strategy could further influence the security dynamics within Europe and the alliance's collective response to emerging threats.
