Kyiv Court Sentences Man to 7.5 Years for Planting Explosives in Scooter Targeting Soldier

Суд у Києві виніс вирок чоловіку, який заздалегідь спланував теракт, використавши скутер як засіб для атаки на військового.

Ruling by the Dnipro District Court

A 20-year-old man has been convicted on terrorism charges by the Dnipro District Court in Kyiv. Recruited by Russian intelligence services in June 2025, he acted on behalf of the aggressor state. He traveled to Kyiv with the intent to carry out a terrorist attack, assembling an improvised explosive device in a rented apartment.

To execute the plan, the young man placed the explosives inside a scooter that had been purchased by the plot's organizer through an online marketplace. The scooter was left in Kyiv's Dnipro District, where the device was to be remotely detonated as a military serviceman approached. However, the bomb malfunctioned, allowing the soldier to escape unharmed. Notably, the victim had met a woman through a dating chatbot; she invited him on a date and asked him to retrieve keys stored under the scooter's seat.

Aftermath of Terrorist Acts

The perpetrator was promised $10,000 for carrying out the attack. He pleaded guilty and expressed sincere remorse. The court sentenced him to 7.5 years in prison, along with confiscation of his property.

Separately, Ukraine's Security Service detained a foreign national who, acting on orders from Russia, was preparing a double terrorist attack in Kyiv. The suspect planned to place an improvised explosive device under a Ukrainian soldier's car, with a second bomb set to detonate after emergency services arrived. This incident underscores the ongoing terrorist threats in Ukraine, demanding heightened vigilance from law enforcement.

This case highlights the severity of the threats facing Ukraine from terrorism linked to Russian intelligence agencies.

The arrests of both the convicted man and the foreigner plotting a double attack demonstrate the urgent need for strengthened security measures and closer cooperation among law enforcement bodies to prevent future crimes. Amid the ongoing conflict, it remains critical to stay alert and take every possible step to protect civilians and military personnel.

The recent sentencing of a young man for attempted terrorism in Kyiv adds to a troubling pattern of similar cases in Ukraine. For instance, a Lubny woman received a 15-year sentence for her role in a terrorist plot, highlighting the persistent threat posed by individuals acting on behalf of foreign interests. As these incidents unfold, they underscore the urgent need for comprehensive measures to combat terrorism within the country.
