Ukrainian Broadcaster Suspends Paralympics Opening Ceremony Coverage Over Russian Participation

Український мовник призупинив трансляцію відкриття Паралімпійських ігор через участь Росії.

Opening Ceremony Boycott for the XIV Winter Paralympic Games

Ukraine's public broadcaster, Suspilne Movlennia, has cancelled its planned broadcast of the opening ceremony for the XIV Winter Paralympic Games. This decision is a direct response to the International Paralympic Committee's (IPC) allowance of six Russian and four Belarusian athletes to compete under their national flags. Should these athletes win gold medals, their national anthems will be played. This move by the IPC has been met with strong opposition in Ukraine, where it is seen as legitimizing nations engaged in ongoing conflict.

The National Paralympic Committee of Ukraine has demanded that the Ukrainian flag not be used during the 2026 Paralympics opening ceremony. In solidarity with its national team's boycott, Suspilne Movlennia will not air the ceremony on any of its platforms due to the participation of Russian and Belarusian representatives.

Concerns Regarding Russian Athletes

Among the athletes approved for the Paralympics in Italy are four Russians who, in April 2022, received awards from Igor Levitin, an aide to Vladimir Putin. The IPC's invitation for Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete under their own flags in the 2026 Games is viewed by Ukrainian society as part of a systematic policy to normalize these countries' presence on the world stage, which is deemed unacceptable. This stance reflects the deep-seated tensions stemming from Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Suspilne Movlennia will continue to broadcast the competitive performances of Ukrainian Paralympians, despite the boycott of the opening ceremony. In a separate development, skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych, who had planned to wear a memorial helmet for his first run at the 2026 Olympic Games, has been disqualified.

The boycott is part of a larger movement to uphold national values and principles that defend Ukraine's territorial integrity and dignity. It also underscores the importance of international solidarity on issues related to aggression and military conflict.
