Escalation Over the Iran Nuclear Deal

During the first meeting of the Peace Council in Washington on February 19, US President Donald Trump set a ten-day deadline for clarifying the status of the nuclear deal with Iran. In the context of this ultimatum, the United States is escalating its military power in the Middle East. The Pentagon has deployed over 50 advanced fighter jets, including F-22s and F-35s, to the region and has dispatched a second carrier strike group led by the USS Gerald R. Ford. US forces are now on high alert and could potentially strike within days.

Against this backdrop, Tehran has begun urgently reinforcing its nuclear centers by constructing concrete sarcophagi over them. The latest round of indirect negotiations in Geneva concluded on Tuesday. Iran's Foreign Ministry stated there was progress on principles following the talks. However, American sources dismissed the Geneva meeting as a sham that yielded no tangible results.

Negotiations and a Potential Compromise

Trump remarked that 'we may now have to take another step, or maybe not. Perhaps we will reach a deal. You will likely find out within the next 10 days.' He also emphasized that 'good talks are underway,' but added that 'it has been proven over many years that reaching a meaningful deal with Iran is not easy.' Trump stressed that 'we must reach a meaningful agreement, or bad things will happen.'

This standoff underscores the persistent tension in US-Iran relations, a key flashpoint in global geopolitics. The ten-day deadline set by Trump could prove a pivotal moment, as both sides seek a path to compromise. The US military buildup signals Washington's serious intent, while Iran's actions to harden its nuclear sites suggest Tehran's readiness to counter any threats. These developments carry significant implications for regional security and global energy markets, given the strategic importance of the Persian Gulf.
