Trump’s Endorsement of Pashinyan
U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly backed Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan just days before the country’s parliamentary elections scheduled for June 7. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump affirmed his “full and unquestionable support” for Pashinyan, declaring that
“Nikol fully shares my vision of peace and prosperity for Armenia and the entire South Caucasus region”– Donald Trump. He also urged:
“Let’s Make Armenia Great Again”– Donald Trump.
Trump referenced a recent visit by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to Armenia, during which discussions focused on a joint transit corridor project. According to the American president, this initiative could transform the South Caucasus and help U.S. energy companies gain access to routes from Central Asia.
Regional Political Landscape
Against the backdrop of regional politics, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Pashinyan in Yerevan on May 4. That visit prompted Russia’s Foreign Ministry to summon Armenia’s ambassador, Gurgen Arsenyan. Pashinyan has expressed Armenia’s desire to join the European Union, noting that the country would benefit from closer ties with the EU even if full membership does not materialize.
For its part, Russia has threatened to revise agreements with Armenia concerning supplies of natural gas, petroleum products, and diamonds.
Trump’s endorsement may signal growing U.S. influence in the South Caucasus amid rising tensions between Armenia and Russia. In particular, Pashinyan’s push for closer EU integration points to potential shifts in the region’s geopolitical balance, which could affect Armenia’s long-standing ties with Moscow.
The proposed transit corridor project underscores the importance of energy routes and could become a key element in Armenia’s economic development, but it also carries risks for relations with the Kremlin.
As regional dynamics shift, the recent visit of Ukrainian President Zelenskyy to Armenia highlights the intricate political landscape that Pashinyan navigates. This meeting underscores the increasing engagement from Western leaders, which may further influence Armenia's foreign policy and its aspirations for closer ties with the European Union.
