Monaco Blast

On June 29 at 9:00 PM, an explosion in Monaco injured Ukrainian businessman Vadim Yermolayev, his wife, and their 13-year-old son. Yermolayev is recognized as one of Ukraine’s top 100 wealthiest individuals and has held a Cypriot passport since 2017. In December 2023, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky imposed 10-year sanctions on him. According to Ukraine’s Security Service, Yermolayev re-registered his alcohol business in Russian-occupied Crimea under Russian law.

Official Statement and Witness Accounts

The Monaco government officially stated that the explosion was a deliberate criminal act. Four other people nearby who suffered from shock were also taken to the hospital.

“I was playing tennis with friends when we heard a loud bang, followed by a piercing siren. All the parents called because they were very worried.” — a 12-year-old witness

A 24-year-old man who also witnessed the event remarked: “Honestly, we know this kind of thing can happen in Europe or in Brazil, where I’m from. But here, in Monaco itself… It’s deeply shocking.” The tragedy has sparked widespread concern, especially given Monaco’s reputation as one of the safest cities in the world.

This incident underscores the growing security risks even in the most protected environments. Investigators are working to uncover the details, and the fallout from the event could tarnish Monaco’s image as a safe and stable haven. Moreover, the case of Vadim Yermolayev highlights the tense dynamics between Ukraine and Russia, as well as broader concerns about the safety of Ukrainian citizens abroad.
