Launch of AirPlant One Facility
On June 11, 2023, California-based company Twelve inaugurated AirPlant One in Moses Lake, Washington—the world’s first commercial facility producing E-Jet synthetic aviation fuel. This breakthrough technology converts carbon dioxide and water into liquid hydrocarbons that are chemically identical to conventional fossil fuels. As a result, the new fuel can be used without any modifications to aircraft engines, refueling equipment, or logistics infrastructure.
AirPlant One focuses on manufacturing E-Jet, a synthetic jet fuel that meets international ASTM certification standards. This innovation marks a major step toward reducing the aviation industry’s environmental footprint, as E-Jet can cut CO2 emissions by 90% compared to standard kerosene-based fuels. The aviation sector has long sought viable alternatives to lower its carbon impact, and this development offers a promising pathway.
Environmental Benefits and Applications
The production process relies on air and clean energy sources. AirPlant One also generates synthetic E-Naphtha, a chemical substitute for petroleum-based naphtha. E-Naphtha is already being used in:
- plastics manufacturing
- packaging materials
- solvents
- automotive components
In this way, the new plant not only advances green technology but also expands the potential uses of synthetic materials across various industrial sectors.
The opening of AirPlant One could play a pivotal role in steering the aviation industry toward greater sustainability, as cutting CO2 emissions is a critical goal in combating climate change. With rising demands for eco-friendly solutions, such innovations may form the foundation of future strategies for the aviation sector aiming to reduce its environmental impact. Additionally, the technologies developed at this facility could find applications in other industries, helping to lessen overall dependence on fossil fuels.
