Incident at the Central Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility
In the early hours of Sunday, June 7, 2026, at 02:10, an enemy drone attack triggered an explosion at the site of the Central Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility (CSFSF). The blast sparked a fire covering roughly 40 square meters on the facility grounds. While emergency crews quickly extinguished the flames, the container reception building suffered partial collapse. Crucially, no spent nuclear fuel was stored in the affected building at the time of the attack, and containers holding highly radioactive materials remained untouched.
According to Ukraine’s national nuclear energy company, Energoatom, no staff members or on-duty personnel were injured. Radiation levels at the CSFSF site and surrounding areas remained within normal limits as of Sunday morning. This event once again highlights the severe risks posed to nuclear sites amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
