Clause on Ukraine’s EU Accession Removed from Summit Statement

Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar announced that a clause aimed at accelerating Ukraine’s EU membership was cut from the final declaration of the EU summit. The decision came after four hours of negotiations among EU leaders, during which the text was heavily revised based on Budapest’s proposals. All language included in the final document was approved by consensus among all member states.

Magyar stated that the removal of the provision on fast-tracking accession happened at his initiative at the last moment.

“It was not easy,”
he emphasized. This final statement is the first in a year and a half to be adopted by all member states.

Ukraine’s EU Membership Negotiations

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed hope that all six negotiation clusters could be opened in the coming weeks or months. Ukraine has already officially started talks on the first cluster on its path to EU membership. The country aims to complete the main phase of negotiations within the next 18 months and plans to sign a membership treaty by 2027.

The removal of the clause on fast-tracking Ukraine’s accession from the EU summit’s final statement highlights the complexity of political negotiations within the European Union, where individual countries’ positions can significantly shape the overall consensus. This episode also underscores the importance of diplomacy and negotiation in Ukraine’s integration into European structures, despite the presence of certain obstacles.
