Planning for the Return of Civil Aviation to Ukraine's Skies
Ukraine has initiated the process of preparing to resume civil aviation. A special task force has been established to develop a step-by-step plan for reopening the country's airspace to civilian aircraft. The order to form this group was signed by Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration, Oleksiy Kubrakov.
This working group will serve as an advisory body to the Ministry for Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development. Its primary task is to formulate proposals for restarting civil aviation flights within Ukraine. Deputy Minister Serhiy Derkach has been appointed as the group's head. The group's membership includes:
- representatives from the State Emergency Service,
- the Agency for Restoration,
- the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine,
- the State Aviation Service and the Ministry for Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development,
- the heads of Boryspil, Kyiv, and Lviv airports,
- the director of the Ukrainian Air Navigation Service Provider (Ukraerorukh).
'To create a working group for preparing to restore the operation of Ukraine's airports, and to approve its regulations and composition - order', Oleksiy Kubrakov
A crucial component of the restoration will be ensuring reliable logistics and transport connections. As Rostyslav Shurma noted, 'the availability of reliable logistics and transport connections, especially air travel, are fundamentally important elements for the country's business and investment activity.'
This move follows a significant milestone in December, when the first civilian aircraft since the full-scale invasion departed from Boryspil airport. The establishment of the task force signals the state's intent to return to normal aviation operations and reconnect with the international community. The resumption of flights is seen as vital for economic recovery and re-establishing global links.
Restoring civil aviation is a critical step in Ukraine's post-war recovery after a prolonged period of restrictions caused by military actions. It also demonstrates the state's aim to revitalize economic activity and support the tourism sector. In an era of global integration, reopening air travel could help attract investment and foster international business connections.
As Ukraine focuses on revitalizing its civil aviation sector, it is also prioritizing broader infrastructure needs. The government has laid out its summer agenda, emphasizing the importance of infrastructure defense, diplomacy, and the return of prisoners of war. These efforts are crucial for ensuring a stable environment that supports the resumption of air travel and other essential services.
