Ukraine Warns Israel of Diplomatic Fallout Over Ship Carrying Stolen Wheat

Україна попереджає Ізраїль про можливі наслідки через перевезення краденого зерна.

Strains in Ukraine-Israel Ties Over Cargo Ship Incident

Ukraine has cautioned Israel that bilateral relations could face a serious crisis if the vessel PANORMITIS, allegedly transporting wheat from Ukraine’s occupied territories, is allowed to dock and unload at the port of Haifa. The ship arrived in Haifa Bay earlier today and is expected to discharge its cargo at the port.

Axios correspondent Barak Ravid reported, citing a senior diplomatic source in Kyiv, that Ukraine is closely monitoring the situation and will not overlook it.

“If the ship is permitted to dock and unload, there will be consequences—specifically for our bilateral ties,” the Ukrainian source stated.
This warning comes amid growing tensions over the handling of grain shipments from conflict zones.

Concerns Over Stolen Ukrainian Grain

According to Haaretz editor Avi Scharf, four shipments of stolen Ukrainian grain have already been unloaded in Israel this year. The same senior diplomatic source in Kyiv added that

“frankly, this feels like a slap in the face, given the strategic goodwill Ukraine has shown—from recognizing Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization to criminalizing antisemitism.”

The Ukrainian diplomat argued that 'profiting from stolen cargo should be beneath Israel’s dignity.' These developments have raised serious concerns about the future trajectory of Ukraine-Israel relations, particularly in light of the PANORMITIS situation.

This incident highlights the mounting friction between Ukraine and Israel, which could worsen if the PANORMITIS is cleared to unload. Notably, Ukraine’s vigilance over the use of its stolen grain underscores potential risks to Israel’s international reputation. As Ukraine continues to grapple with an ongoing war, maintaining strong diplomatic ties with partners is crucial for its foreign policy and economic stability.

In light of these tensions, it's worth noting that Israel has recently allowed a vessel carrying Russian grain to depart, despite Ukraine's demands for its seizure. This development raises questions about Israel's position on grain shipments from conflict zones, further complicating the already strained Ukraine-Israel relations.
