Bringing Ukrainian Leaders Home from Abroad
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that Ukraine has launched an initiative to repatriate and rebury prominent Ukrainian figures who were laid to rest outside the country. These individuals fought for Ukraine’s independence and were buried in foreign lands. Zelenskyy emphasized that returning them to their homeland—now an independent and sovereign state—is a fitting tribute to those who dedicated their lives to Ukraine’s cause.
First Heroes Selected for Return
Among the first to be brought back are Colonel Andriy Melnyk and his wife, Sofia. The authorities in Luxembourg have already granted permission for the couple’s reburial in Ukraine. The president noted that Ukrainian heroes from various eras, who defended the idea of independence and fought for the state, are buried across Europe and the Americas.
“We have both the opportunity and the moral obligation to rebury them here, in Ukraine, at home,” said Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Preparations are also underway for Colonel Yevhen Konovalets, who is interred at Crooswijk Cemetery in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The Ukrainian president stated: “Decisions are being prepared regarding Colonel Yevhen Konovalets and other strong historical figures. The Ukrainian people deserve their historical memory, and we are strengthening that true memory.” Zelenskyy thanked everyone assisting in this process, noting that the Office’s team is currently focused on carrying out this task.
This move represents a significant step for Ukraine in restoring historical memory and honoring heroes who fought for the nation’s independence. Repatriating these figures from abroad not only helps preserve national identity but also underscores the importance of historical memory for contemporary society. It could become a pivotal moment in shaping national consciousness and gratitude for the contributions of previous generations in the struggle for Ukraine’s independence.
As Ukraine embarks on this important journey of honoring its heroes, the return of Andriy Melnyk and his wife marks a significant milestone in the country's efforts to reclaim its historical narrative. This initiative not only serves to reconnect the nation with its past but also highlights the ongoing commitment to remember those who bravely fought for Ukraine's independence.
