Ukrainian Official Meets with UN Special Representative
Ukraine's First Deputy Minister of Social Policy, Family, and Unity, Lyudmyla Shemelynets, held a meeting with Pramila Patten, the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict. Their discussion focused on protecting victims of sexual violence during wartime and a pilot compensation project being implemented by the Global Survivors Fund. This meeting underscores the international community's growing focus on accountability for conflict-related crimes.
The meeting took place during the 70th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70), where the Ukrainian delegation presented its stance. Shemelynets also participated in a roundtable titled 'Beyond 1325: Shaping Inclusive Peace through Local and Intergenerational Action,' which addressed women's roles in peace and security processes. It is crucial to note that sexual violence in war is considered a war crime with no statute of limitations.
National Action Plan and International Cooperation
As part of these efforts, Ukraine is implementing a National Action Plan to fulfill UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on 'Women, Peace, and Security' through 2030. These initiatives aim to improve protection for women and children affected by conflict-related violence and to safeguard their rights.
International discussions on sexual violence in conflict highlight the urgent need for states to actively protect victims' rights. The pilot reparations project initiated by the Global Survivors Fund could represent a significant step toward justice and recovery for survivors. Such initiatives not only support victims but also help build greater global awareness of the necessity to protect women in conflict zones.
