Today, October 1, Ukraine celebrates Defender's Day, as well as Cossack Day. This date coincides with the Feast of the Protection of the Holy Mother of God. President Volodymyr Zelensky is participating in the solemn events.
Volodymyr Zelensky: 'Ukraine is on this land. It is not a coincidence, not a mercy, but a result gained by Ukrainians. Its own culture, its own independence.'
In his address, the president emphasized that the existence of Ukraine is the result of the struggle and courage of its people. On this day, all those who defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the state are honored.
Defender's Day: traditions and significance of the holiday
Ukrainians have been celebrating this holiday for the third year in a row, which has become an opportunity to honor the warriors who defend the independence and sovereignty of the country. Today, not only are the heroes of our time honored, but also the veterans of World War II and our Cossack ancestors, who defended the right to independence are remembered.
Defender's Day was established by decree of President Petro Poroshenko in 2014. This holiday was initiated as a symbol of recognition and support for the servicemen who defend our state. After the annexation of Crimea by Russia, the celebration coincided with the Feast of the Protection of the Holy Mother of God - October 14.
Defender's Day unites Ukrainians in honoring the warriors who stand guard over the country, reminds of the importance of remembering the feats of past generations, and supports and expresses gratitude to modern defenders. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of supporting and caring for war veterans, who have made a significant contribution to the formation and defense of Ukraine.
