International Freyja Initiative Announced
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has unveiled the launch of the Freyja international project, aimed at developing a new anti-ballistic missile system. Developed in partnership with European allies, the initiative seeks to serve as a counterpart to the U.S.-made Patriot system, but with a focus on lower costs and scalability for mass production. The announcement came on the heels of the NATO summit in Ankara, underscoring the pressing security concerns amid today's challenges. An inaugural international meeting on the Freyja project is set to take place in France in the near future. Zelenskyy stated,
'Our first meeting on this front will be held in France. It will happen shortly, and we will publicly announce the details.'Ukraine aims to bring together governments, defense manufacturers, and investors to turn this ambitious vision into reality. The president emphasized,
'Our goal is to rally leaders, companies, and investments to present a joint European production project for an anti-ballistic system called Freyja.'
Forging an Anti-Ballistic Coalition
Zelenskyy also expressed hope for establishing a seven-nation anti-ballistic coalition to back the initiative. He noted, 'That would take too long. But now, we can move very quickly with such an anti-ballistic coalition. In the coming days, we will meet and present this plan to the leaders.' The significance of Freyja lies in its potential to shield Ukraine's skies from threats, with the president adding, 'If leaders, their production capabilities, and companies support Freyja, then Freyja will come to life very soon.'
Zelenskyy believes this is 'a truly winning idea' and counts on support from European partners who have been aiding Ukraine throughout the conflict. The Freyja project aims to establish a European alternative for producing interceptor systems that meet modern security and defense requirements.
