Unique Lunar Event Captivates Ukraine
On the night of May 30–31, observers in Ukraine witnessed an uncommon celestial event: a second full moon within a single calendar month, commonly referred to as a blue moon, which coincided with a micromoon. This specific combination will not repeat for another three decades, until 2053. During the event, the moon was approximately 406,135 kilometers from Earth.
Adding to the spectacle, the red star Antares in the constellation Scorpius was visible near the moon. The occurrence delighted both professional astronomers and amateur skywatchers, as blue moons are a rare phenomenon.
Upcoming Astronomical Highlights
Several other celestial events are on the horizon for Ukraine:
- In August 2024, a blue moon will align with a supermoon, appearing 14% larger and 30% brighter than usual.
- In April 2025, a pink moon—also a micromoon—will be visible to Ukrainian observers.
These events showcase the beauty and diversity of astronomical phenomena visible from Ukraine. Blue moons and micromoons captivate not only astronomers but also the general public, sparking wonder and curiosity. Future scheduled events are expected to draw even more people to astronomy, boosting interest in space exploration and natural wonders. This also helps promote scientific awareness among the population.
