Price Gap Between Local and Imported New Potatoes
As of late May, Ukrainian new potatoes are nearly twice as expensive as imported ones, though prices are expected to drop by mid-June when soil-grown and field-harvested crops become available. According to Mykola Furdyha, Director of the Institute of Potato Farming under the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine, imported potatoes come from Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, and other Central Asian countries, where prices range from 50 to 60 UAH per kilogram.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian new potatoes sell for 100 to 130 UAH per kg on the market. For consumers looking to buy the domestic product at a discount, promotional options are offered at 79.99 UAH per kg, though the regular price reaches 114 UAH per kg. Kyiv resident Oleksandr Retyvov notes that the price difference between imported and Ukrainian produce has become quite noticeable.

Furdyha explains that a classic new potato should reach the kitchen table almost immediately after being dug up, “at most within a week, while its thin skin can still be easily peeled off by hand.” He also assures that this situation is purely seasonal and short-lived, since “people are waiting for Ukrainian potatoes because they are of higher quality and go straight from the field to the table.”

In early June, the first soil-grown potatoes will appear in large quantities on the market, and by mid-June, a significant influx of full-fledged open-field produce from southern and central regions of Ukraine is expected.
