Ukrainian Chess Players Shine on the Global Stage

At just 15 years old, Ukrainian chess prodigy Anastasiya Hnatyshyn has won the 2026 European Classical Chess Championship, held in Batumi, Georgia. She secured the top spot with 9 points, edging out her Spanish opponent, Sabrina Vega Gutiérrez, by half a point. Austria’s Olga Badelka finished third with 8.5 points. During the tournament, Hnatyshyn achieved eight wins, two draws, and one loss, earning her 215 rating points.

Before the championship, Hnatyshyn was ranked in the 200s globally, but her impressive performance catapulted her to 17th place in the world rankings. This marks a remarkable achievement for the young player from Lviv.

More Ukrainian Victories

In addition, this past April, 17-year-old Ukrainian Roman Degtyarev also claimed victory at the European Chess Championship in Katowice, Poland. He scored 9 out of 11 possible points, defeating Spanish grandmaster David Anton in the final round.

Another significant development came from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which ordered the Russian Chess Federation to cease operations in Ukraine’s occupied territories, including Crimea, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Luhansk, Kherson regions, and the city of Sevastopol. The lawsuit was filed by the Ukrainian Chess Federation.

Anastasiya Hnatyshyn’s European Championship victory highlights the growing competitiveness of Ukrainian chess players on the international stage.

Given Hnatyshyn’s young age, her success could inspire other emerging talents in Ukraine. Roman Degtyarev’s win further underscores the strong standing of Ukrainian chess players across Europe. The CAS ruling against the Russian Chess Federation may significantly shape the future of chess in Ukraine and internationally, especially amid the region’s ongoing political circumstances.

As Ukrainian athletes continue to excel on the international stage, the recent achievements of chess players like Anastasiya Hnatyshyn and Roman Degtyarev resonate with the impressive performances of other Ukrainian sports figures. For instance, the gold medals claimed by Gerashchenko and Nikitin in Poland further highlight the depth of talent emerging from Ukraine. Such successes not only elevate the profile of Ukrainian sports but also inspire future generations of athletes.
