Ukrainian Paralympians to Boycott 2026 Closing Ceremony Over Russian and Belarusian Inclusion

Українські паралімпійці відмовляються брати участь у фінальній церемонії 2026 року через присутність спортсменів з Росії та Білорусі.

Paralympic Ceremonies Facing Boycott

The Ukrainian national team will boycott the closing ceremony of the 2026 Paralympic Games. This decision, announced by the National Paralympic Committee of Ukraine to the public broadcaster Suspilne, follows their earlier boycott of the opening ceremony. Both actions are a direct protest against the International Paralympic Committee's (IPC) decision to allow athletes from Russia and Belarus to compete. This move by the IPC has been highly controversial, drawing criticism from nations opposing the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Ukrainian officials have protested the situation, demanding that their national flag not be used during the ceremonies. At the opening ceremony of the XIV Winter Paralympic Games, the Ukrainian flag was carried, but Ukrainian athletes were prohibited from wearing their specially designed parade uniforms featuring the country's map, created by designer Viktor Anisimov. This step has caused outrage among Ukrainian Paralympians, who find it unacceptable to compete alongside representatives from nations continuing a war against their homeland.

Voices of Protest

Hryhorii Vovchynskyi, Ukrainian Paralympian: 'We haven't specifically discussed the closing ceremony yet, but I think our position is 100% clear because of the International Paralympic Committee... There are no words for what is happening here. How can these countries, which are still waging war in Ukraine, be here? I don't know where this world is going. I have no words. The only joy is that the majority of countries support us and say they stand with Ukraine, and that is right.'

In a show of solidarity, Suspilne, Ukraine's national public broadcaster, also refused to air the opening ceremony of the 2026 Paralympics, though it plans to broadcast all competitions featuring Ukrainian athletes. These collective decisions underscore the support for Ukrainian athletes amid a complex and painful international sporting landscape.

The Ukrainian team's boycott of the Paralympic ceremonies highlights profound concern over the participation of athletes from nations engaged in aggression against Ukraine. This stance is driven not only by a desire to protect national interests but also by an effort to communicate Ukraine's position on the war to the international community. The steps taken by Ukraine reflect a broader trend of protesting decisions by international sports bodies that are seen as compromising the ethical foundations of sport.
