High-Level Talks on Protecting Frontline Communities

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held discussions with Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko and the Air Force Commander about safeguarding frontline settlements from Russian strikes. The focus of these talks was on urgently improving defensive measures. Zelenskyy stressed: “We need to significantly strengthen protection—more interceptors, more electronic warfare equipment, and more of our crews are needed right there in the city.”

Funding for Anti-Drone Infrastructure

The Ukrainian government has decided to allocate 96 million hryvnias (about $2.6 million) from the state budget’s reserve fund to build anti-drone protective structures in Kherson and along evacuation routes in the region. This funding will enable the installation of anti-drone barriers on 27 new road sections, covering a total length of over 200 kilometers. To date, protective structures already shield more than 190 kilometers of roads. The work has been carried out by the Kherson Regional Military Administration and Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense.

As of early May, 45% of the annual road repair plan has been completed. A total of 203 crews are working daily to restore road surfaces and improve infrastructure. The President also highlighted the importance of international cooperation, stating: “We are gradually advancing the topic of antiballistic missile production in Europe—we are forming an antiballistic coalition.”

This reflects Ukraine’s proactive stance on security and protecting its citizens from threats originating from Russia. The situation in Kherson is particularly dire, with Russian forces reportedly conducting what has been described as a 'safari' against civilians. The government continues to take steps to ensure residents' safety, as defending frontline communities remains a top priority.

The dialogue between the President and officials underscores the urgency of the situation in regions suffering from Russian shelling. Bolstering defenses—especially through the construction of anti-drone structures—is a critical measure for local population safety. Investments in infrastructure also demonstrate Ukraine’s efforts to strengthen its defense capabilities and readiness to meet the challenges posed by the conflict. These actions may not only improve protection but also aid in the recovery of war-affected regions.

In light of the ongoing threats faced by Kherson, the Ukrainian government has also made significant investments in creating drone-resistant shelters throughout the region. This initiative complements the recent allocation of funds aimed at enhancing the safety of frontline communities, showcasing a comprehensive approach to fortifying defenses against aerial attacks.
