Science Funding in Ukraine
The Ukrainian government has approved a new framework for distributing science funding, with a strong emphasis on the performance of research institutions. A total of over 3 billion hryvnias will be allocated for scientific development. This initiative will provide base funding to 246 leading scientific institutions and higher education establishments, while more than 50,000 scientists and researchers will receive an additional salary supplement.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko stated: 'In total, we are directing over UAH 3 billion to science development across three main areas: incentives for scientific and research-pedagogical staff, the development of research infrastructure and modern equipment, and institutional development.'
The institutions and universities set to receive the largest portions of funding are located in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv, Dnipro, and Sumy.
Primary Funding Areas
The allocated funds will be channeled into three key priority areas:
- Incentives for scientific and research-pedagogical staff;
- Development of research infrastructure and modern equipment;
- Institutional development.
This decision is designed to enhance the effectiveness of scientific activity across Ukraine.
This government move has the potential to significantly impact the nation's scientific potential, as it will provide essential resources for conducting research and improving university educational processes. This substantial investment comes at a critical time for Ukraine's research sector, which faces immense challenges due to the ongoing war. It represents a vital step toward strengthening the country's scientific capacity and boosting its international competitiveness in the long term.
