Odessa Communications Center Opens

A new communications center for the national 112 emergency service has been launched in Odessa, serving Ukraine's southern macro-region. This is the fourth such center to become operational, joining existing facilities in Kyiv, Lviv, and Dnipro. The nationwide 112 service was introduced in July 2023 and has since managed over 11 million calls.

The Role of the 112 Service

During the winter period, the service was a critical channel for citizens to report outages of electricity and heating, playing a vital role in public safety and comfort. A key feature is that the 112 number remains accessible even without mobile network coverage, as calls can be made via Wi-Fi using the dedicated '112 Ukraine' application. This system provides a unified point of contact for all emergency services, including police, fire, and medical aid.

The development of the 112 Service centers is backed by 40 million euros in funding, allocated under a loan agreement between Ukraine and the European Investment Bank. This investment is aimed at significantly improving the quality of emergency response services across the country. The service continues to expand, ensuring citizens have rapid access to help during crises.

The opening of the Odessa center marks a crucial step in strengthening Ukraine's emergency response infrastructure, particularly given the ongoing challenges the nation faces. Expanding the network of centers not only improves access to urgent assistance but also enhances overall public safety by enabling a faster reaction to emergencies.

The secured financing from the European Investment Bank further demonstrates international support for Ukraine's efforts to develop its critical social infrastructure.

As the 112 service continues to evolve, recent updates include enhancements for accessibility, such as the introduction of video calls tailored for sign language users. This feature not only facilitates better communication during emergencies but also aligns with the ongoing efforts to ensure that all citizens can access vital assistance.
