New Study Reveals How Fructose Triggers the Body to Store Fat

A New Take on a Common Sweetener

Researchers at the University of California, Irvine, have traced a previously unknown cascade of metabolic events that helps explain how fructose can push the body toward obesity and diabetes. Published in Science Advances, the investigation centered on high-fructose corn syrup. Experiments in laboratory mice found that blocking the enzyme KHK-C caused fat absorption to decrease through changes in the small intestine.

KHK-C helps carry out fructose metabolism in the small intestine. When the enzyme was disabled, the animals gained less weight and less fat, and they showed lower insulin resistance than the control group. The loss of fructose breakdown in the gut also led to fewer macrophages in the ileum. That reduction, in turn, shortened the lymphatic vessels responsible for transporting dietary fats.

The Microbiome Connection

Alterations in gut bacteria play a central part as well. Fecal microbiota transplant experiments confirmed that the bacterial environment matters, and the researchers now intend to investigate specific bacterial strains. Their goal is to design probiotics that can counteract some of the negative effects of fructose consumption.

These findings could substantially change how scientists understand the obesity and diabetes epidemics affecting modern societies.
