Pilot study explores eating windows and cognition in overweight women
At NUTRITION 2026, the annual flagship meeting of the American Society for Nutrition, researchers from Rutgers University and Rutgers-RWJ Medical Center unveiled findings from a pilot study on time-restricted eating and cognitive function in overweight women. Time-restricted eating has become a popular form of intermittent fasting, but evidence for its effects on the brain remains limited. The trial involved 47 participants aged 50–79, all told to cut their daily calorie intake by 500 kcal. After six months, participants across both groups had shed an average of 6.8 kilograms.
Two meal schedules, contrasting outcomes
The women were split into two arms. One arm of 26 women restricted food intake to under nine hours each day—8.2 hours on average, typically between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. The other followed a standard 12-hour eating schedule. Those in the tighter-window group performed noticeably better on assessments measuring logic, spatial orientation, and memory.

Despite the encouraging signs, the team cautions that larger clinical trials are needed before drawing firm conclusions. Their next phase will look at how circadian rhythms, metabolism, and inflammation interact with eating patterns.
The findings, presented at NUTRITION 2026, point to dietary timing as a potentially meaningful lever for cognitive health, not just weight control. Given rising rates of obesity and an aging population, these results could eventually reshape dietary advice for older women, although further confirmation is necessary.
