Study on Plant-Based Food Alternatives

A UK supermarket study has found that plant-based substitutes for animal products contain twice as many food additives as their animal-derived counterparts. Experts examined 71 pairs of identical products—one animal-based and one plant-based—and published the findings in the scientific journal Food Additives & Contaminants: Part A. This research comes amid a surge in popularity for meat alternatives, raising questions about their overall health impact.

According to the data, plant-based products contain approximately 199 food additives, compared to 100 in meat and dairy items. The total number of ingredients in the plant-based product line reaches 1,566, while meat and dairy products have 1,110. Among the most common additives found are:

  • carotene
  • calcium carbonate E170
  • lactic acid
  • methylcellulose

Notably, methylcellulose was used 15 times as a texturizer in plant-based meat and fish alternatives.

Impact on Longevity

Additionally, the study showed that people who have completely given up meat have a 19% lower probability of living to 100, while vegans face a 29% lower chance of becoming centenarians. A Chinese study found even worse outcomes for pescatarian and vegetarian diets compared to meat consumption.

Experts note that although all detected additives comply with UK safety standards, vegans should exercise caution. As Joseph Whittaker stated,

“Although all detected additives comply with UK safety standards, vegans should be cautious.”

It is worth noting that vegetable and fruit salads are healthy, but ultra-processed plant-based foods contain many additives. Animal product substitutes undergo extensive industrial processing, and manufacturers are forced to use refined components since plant-based meat does not exist in nature. Consumers often switch to a diet of highly purified products that may contain high levels of salt and sugar.

This study underscores the importance of being careful when choosing food, especially for those following a plant-based diet. With the growing popularity of plant-based meat alternatives, consumers need to be aware of potential risks associated with consuming processed products and pay attention to the ingredients of the items they purchase. The elevated number of food additives in plant-based products may affect health, making it crucial to maintain a balanced diet that includes whole, natural foods.

As the debate around the health implications of plant-based diets continues, it's essential to consider the impact of various additives. Recent studies have shown a correlation between certain common food additives and increased health risks, including hypertension. Understanding these connections can provide valuable insights for those evaluating their dietary choices.
