Venezuela Earthquake Death Toll Surpasses 1,900

Більше 1,900 загиблих внаслідок землетрусу у Венесуелі.

Rescue Operations Underway in Venezuela

Following a series of earthquakes on June 24, rescue efforts continue across Venezuela. The death toll has now exceeded 1,900, with the hardest-hit area being the northern coastal region of La Guaira, where at least 100 buildings have collapsed. Rescuers are facing severe shortages of equipment and machinery, significantly hampering their work.

The two quakes, measuring magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, struck just 39 seconds apart. In response, the Venezuelan government has deployed over 100 heavy machinery units to the disaster zones to assist rescue operations. However, local residents are often forced to find their own solutions. In one case, neighbors pooled their money to rent a private excavator.

“Official teams arrived at the scene without tools to lift the concrete slabs that trapped his son and ex-wife,” said local resident Eric Poletti.

International Aid and Ongoing Challenges

International humanitarian and rescue teams from Japan, Spain, Qatar, and the Dominican Republic have arrived to assist Venezuela. Qatari rescuers in La Guaira are using mobile phone signal triangulation and canine units to locate survivors. Their equipment includes:

  • fiber-optic cameras to search for people under rubble
  • acoustic devices to detect survivors
  • high-frequency radios
  • hydraulic lifts
  • gas-powered cutters
  • powerful floodlights
  • specially trained search dogs

The opposition party 'Vente', led by Nobel Prize winner María Corina Machado, is also involved in disaster response efforts. As rescue operations continue, Venezuelan society faces immense challenges related to recovery and providing aid to victims.

This catastrophe underscores not only the scale of natural disasters but also Venezuela's vulnerability to such crises, given its pre-existing economic and social struggles. International aid arriving from various countries is critically important for sustaining rescue operations and delivering urgent medical care. Meanwhile, rebuilding infrastructure and housing will require significant effort and resources, which could impact social stability in the region.

The ongoing rescue operations highlight the escalating crisis in Venezuela, as the death toll continues to rise.
