Berlin-Paris Rail Connection Set to Restart by Mid-December
The Intercity Express (ICE) train service linking Berlin and Paris is scheduled to resume operations no later than mid-December. This vital rail route was suspended in summer 2023 due to technical challenges involving the European Train Control System (ETCS) on the ICE 407 trainsets. Until these issues are fully resolved, passengers have had to transfer trains in Frankfurt am Main or Mannheim. One-way fares for this route will start at €99.99.
The disruption stemmed from onboard ETCS equipment supplied by French manufacturer Alstom. TÜV Rheinland identified formal compliance errors in this system, prompting the European Union Agency for Railways (ERA) to launch a formal investigation. However, officials have confirmed that no safety or quality defects were found. Deutsche Bahn has stated that the exact date for restoring direct service will be confirmed once all necessary testing is completed.
Updated Timetable and Rail Milestone in South Africa
Starting December 13, trains will run daily in both directions. The service departs Berlin at approximately 7:00 a.m., arriving at Paris Gare de l'Est by 2:50 p.m., with stops in Halle (Saale), Erfurt, and Strasbourg along the way.
Meanwhile, South Africa has set a new rail freight record with a 7.6-kilometer-long train consisting of 696 wagons, surpassing the previous benchmark set in 2001. Operated by Transnet Freight Rail (TFR), this train traveled 861 kilometers, beating the former record held by Australian mining company BHP Iron Ore by 14 wagons and nearly 247 meters in length.
The record-breaking freight train departed from the Port of Saldanha and arrived at Loop 18 in the Northern Cape Province. Its movement was powered by several locomotives—15E electric and 43DE diesel models—positioned at the front, middle, and rear, coordinated through a distributed traction system with radio remote control. This achievement highlights significant advancements in rail transport technology both in Europe and Africa.
Restoring high-speed rail service between Berlin and Paris marks a crucial enhancement for Europe's transport network, fostering increased tourism and business exchanges between the two major cities. Together with South Africa's freight train milestone, these developments underscore the expanding capabilities of rail systems worldwide, promising greater transport efficiency and reduced environmental impact.
As rail services in Europe are set to enhance connectivity, it's worth noting that South Africa has recently achieved a remarkable feat in freight transportation. Transnet Freight Rail has established a new world record with a train measuring 7.6 kilometers in length, covering 861 kilometers in a single journey. This milestone not only showcases advancements in rail technology but also highlights the growing importance of efficient rail systems globally.
